Hanna Wendelbo Wallpaper
For over two decades, I have been drawing and designing patterns that eventually find their way onto walls all over the country. Almost always, I draw inspiration from nature and my lovely garden.

I enjoy sketching out my pattern ideas with pen and paper. I think so clearly when the pattern itself takes shape on the paper. It’s as if that’s when all the patterns truly come to life, and I can begin to visualize them on the walls of a home—a cozy home, with the scent of both coffee and freshly baked cinnamon rolls.

Designing Wallpaper
I almost always start by sketching out my designs on Post-it notes to find a good rhythm.
The process of sketching out the Marguerite design followed the same method. The idea, which I quickly sketch out on Post-it notes, is imported into the computer to make sure the pattern repeat looks good on a larger wall.
After that, I print out a rough sketch to scale, which I then clean up and color to create the actual original for the design.
When choosing wallpaper for your interior, 80% of the decision is based on the wallpaper’s color. The rest of the choice comes down to the pattern. It’s no wonder that, as a wallpaper designer, you sometimes get a little nervous when you reach the stage where it’s time to choose the color palette for a wallpaper collection.
Before you can begin the color selection process, each pattern must be separated—that is, every individual color is isolated and placed in its own layer. These different layers are then loaded onto separate printing cylinders, and the color selection process begins.
At the printer’s, there’s a paper proof where you can see how each individual color prints. Believe me, sometimes it can be a real mystery when you’re standing there adjusting the colors and still can’t get it right!
We start with my printouts and then try to match the colors on the actual printed wallpaper. After 2–3 adjustments, it’s usually spot on.
I always feel just as proud and warm inside when I see someone who has chosen to display my design in their home.
That very moment when the feeling rushes through my body—“yes, that’s where it belongs”—is just as amazing every time, even though I’ve been doing this for over 20 years. A collection usually includes about 30 items, so there are quite a few times I get to experience that feeling.
