Create an authentic or modern take on a retro-inspired interior in your kitchen, living room, or home office. The classic retro style features geometric patterns that exude a playful vibe. Combined with unique pattern designs full of eye-catching elements, they’ll transport you back to your chosen retro era.
6 Tips for Creating a Retro Vibe at Home
This beautiful reddish-brown wood is one of the hardest types of wood in the world. Teak is ideal for use in wet areas because the material is water-resistant. With a little care, this furniture will stay beautiful for many years to come. Teak furniture enjoyed its heyday in Sweden during the 1950s and 1960s. But it actually looks absolutely phenomenal in our modern homes, where the colors gray, white, and black let the warm wood stand out.
To give your space a retro touch, choose furniture with clean lines and an abstract feel. Retro-inspired rooms are often filled with furniture that, at first glance, may seem incompatible. But in reality, all the pieces come together and ultimately form a functional and harmonious whole.
If the ’60s were all about bold patterns and vibrant colors, the ’70s were, if possible, even more of everything. The colors, however, were slightly more muted and the patterns smaller, but they were everywhere—on wallpaper, tile, and textiles. We see the typical bold “retro colors”—yellow, orange, brown, green, and turquoise—that turn any room into a playful retro oasis.
Plastic, a new material that found its way into 1970s homes. Lamps, rugs, chairs, and decorative items were crafted in futuristic shapes using this exciting new material. In the photo above, we see a decadent statement chair made of yellow hard plastic.
Retro-style lighting creates a wonderful atmosphere while also adding character to the room. Classics like the Bumling, the Nesso table lamp, or brass-finished multi-arm chandeliers add a cool retro touch to your room.
Fill the room with green plants that not only add visual interest but also improve the room’s air quality. Fill the String shelf with a decorative green hanging plant, or let a trailing plant climb up the wall as a wall decoration. Play with different heights—place the plant on a stylish stool or hang it from the ceiling. The elephant ear plant had fallen out of favor for a while but is now back in many of our homes—and understandably so! Here are a few plants that are trending during this retro era: elephant ear, parlor palm, monstera, Sanseveria (mother-in-law’s tongue), and crassula (jew’s tear).
Modern Retro
Modern retro is an eclectic blend of vintage and modern details. You’ll find materials and design elements from the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s mixed with contemporary decor. For example, you can pair white retro wallpaper with a teak side table adorned with a vase, a pair of candlesticks, or a coffee table book in a modern style.
With just a few simple touches, you can make this style fit seamlessly into the modern world. What was once seen as old and outdated is gradually becoming trendy again. Retro’s uncomplicated, functional design adds a nostalgic charm that’s hard to resist.
